This
is Dorothy, my baby girl syrian hamster. I bought her because my
best friend from elementary school died mysteriously in her sleep at
age 20, and she was the person that introduced me to hamsters, but I
hadn't had one since I was ten.
Dorothy is an amazing hamster. We have to padlock her cage shut
because she knows how to open the door, and so far has figured out all
the other mechanisms we've used to keep her in (like pushing on twist
ties long enough to untwist them). She is also the most
people-oriented hamster I have ever seen. My mother was in the
hospital for seven months this year, and I would take Dorothy to visit
her, but she also brought lots of joy to the nurses, and other
patients. She'd let everyone hold her, and when it was time to come
back to me, she'd cuddle up and have a nap. She'll even sleep on me
while I am at the computer (like now!) for hours, or until I have to
print something, then she looks at me like "make that noise stop! I'm
trying to sleep!"
