Chubby, the Pet of the Day
Name: Chubby
Age: Two years old
Gender: Female
Kind: Western Hognose Snake
Home: Campbell, California, USA

Chubby came to live with me almost two years ago. At that time, she was about five inches long and thinner than a pencil! Now she is two feet long and bigger around than my thumb!

Chubby is a wonderful pet. Her small size makes her very easy to take care of, and she has a very friendly personality. I've read a lot about how Hognoses will puff up or play dead when people reach close to touch them, but Chubby has never done either of those things! Her small size and funny looking nose appeals to people who would normally be afraid of snakes, so she's a wonderful "snake ambassador" to teach people about how wonderful they can really be.

Unlike many snakes that spend the majority of their day sleeping in their favorite hiding spot, Chubby is almost always up and about, "Burrowing" in her tank (She puts only her head under the sand and slithers around with the rest of her above the surface!) and climbing on her sandstone rocks and fake cactus.

For me, she is a never-ending source of smiles. After a hard day at work, I like nothing better that to sit with her in my lap and a good book and relax the evening away!
