You could always buy a 2-way baby monitor so you can talk with your cat while you're away, I suppose. I guess they make the pet equivalent to this, but companies love taking something that already exists on the "human" side, marketing it to pet parents, and charging double the price for it, though.
If you're coming home to "everything destroyed", that means your cat is bored and is making his own fun. Cats need interaction and entertainment, too. You can buy several inexpensive toys to keep around the house to help keep your kitty entertained. Karen's suggestions above are great -- a bird feeder outside a window they can watch, a fish tank, are all great ideas. Here are some of my favorite inexpensive toys:
Cat Dancer:

This is probably the most inexpensive toy you can buy for your cat, yet they will probably use it the most. Stick one in every doorway in rooms they frequent, or attach one to their cat tree.
Turbo Scratcher:

This is the most played with toy that I have for my cats, and I got mine for free. Espeon plays with this at LEAST every single night. You can buy refills for the cardboard in the center very very very cheap on amazon (but they're like triple the price if you buy it from petco, etc).
Sunny Seat:

Use this in a window with a bird feeder nearby. I was very skeptical of this product at first, but after reading only raving reviews about it, my BF and I are convinced and are going to order one.
And for some toys on timers that will turn on and off randomly to provide more stimulation for your kitties...
Automatic Cat Teaser:

Twitch Teaser Cat Toy:

Lazer Pointers:

Not sure what the difference between these two products are, as they appear to be from the same company. I've only personally used the BOLT one... one of my petsitting clients has it for their cat, and I would keep it on while I was away. It would randomly flick on while I was there visiting him, and he would always go nuts chasing it.
You could use any or all of these toys in conjunction with a camera so you can check in on your kitty from time to time. OR you can splurge and go for something that combines some of the above by allowing you to check in on and interact with your pet while you're away via a mobile app with the Pet Cube. Looks like it still is in the pre-order stage, but you can pre-order it with some extras for $179.
