Thread: Hermes Wed. X-Ray & Skin Biopsy *UPDATE BACK HOME* Prays for Recovery after Surgery

  1. #16
Well on Friday May 1st I had to call the vet again because he still wouldn't stop scratching at his head and he reopened his wound again so the cone was still on his head and the vet called me back Friday evening and said that she would like to give him a shot of depo to help stop the itch.

So we took him into the vets and she gave him a shot and said to try to take the cone off in 24 hours and see what happens.

On Sunday I took the cone off and he went after it again. I tried later that day thinking that maybe he just needed more time for the medicine to get into his system and no that wasn't the case, he went right after his head and cut the wound open again.

The vet told us to call her on Monday if he didn't improve and so I did but she wasn't able to return my call yesterday due to her own chemo treatment she had to go through.

I called the vets this morning and she wanted to see him a noon today and I thought when I looked at his wound last night that it was spreading and she agreed when she looked at it today.

So I had to leave my little man at the vets so they could gas him, take a scrap of the wound, test it for ringworm, and she said she wanted to make sure it wasn't skin cancer either.

I'm really hoping that they find out what it is and it's nothing too horrible.

The poor guy has had this cone on now for over a week and 1/2.

Please say a little pray that everything turns out ok.

    Thanks,
    Melissa

Awww! Poor baby! I hope he will get better soon, that it is nothing serious.. Nothing worries us like one of our babies or a PT baby with problems.

The vet just called and said that she is doing a culture test for ring worm for hermes and that will take 2 weeks.

In the mean time we have to keep doing his antibotic and keep his cone on for 2 weeks.

Poor guy is not going to be very happy about htat

I'm so sorry to hear that; the poor guy must be miserable. I know you are as well - it hurts us all when our babies are hurt.

Let us know what happens; two weeks just seems so awfully long!!

That little stinker. I know that Creamsicle w/her allergies absolutely cannot stop scratching unless she gets a depo shot or takes her Prednisolone. Sometimes the Pred just isn't enough, though, and she has to get the depo shot. I hope the itching stops for poor little Hermes.

When I got home last night Hermes just wanted love and of course I gave him lots and lots of love.

I have to put the meds back on his head again and he didn't like that feeling at all last night or this morning. I feel bad that I have to do this to him 2x a day but it's hopefully for his own good and we just have to keep a really good eye on it.

Earlier this morning around 4 a.m. he got the cone off his head, I'm not sure how he did but he did and my husband had to wake me to help put his cone back on his head.

It appeared he didn't scratch it open again but that cone has to stay on for 2 weeks.

We have to wait the 2 weeks to see if he turns out positive for the ringworm. If so he will be put on liquid meds. At least we know it's not skin cancer which is wonderful news but ringworm I really don't want him to have either....and I really hope it doesn't get passed onto our other guys.

I just have to make sure I spoil him like crazy right now.

Anikaca77, if it is ringworm, you know that it is highly contagious to not only other cats, but humans also.

Prayers on the way for your little man Hermes, that whatever it is, he has a full and speedy recovery.

    Yes I am aware.

So far none of the other cats have had any signs of it and Hermes head is looking so much better.

I really think the scraping did help him alot in the this case although he still trys to scratch the cone.

So I don't know if the wound is still itcy but I'm gathering it is.

We are keeping an eye on everyone. We will find out for sure if the test is postive on May 19th.

Yesterday I called the vets because over the weekend we took Hermes cone off for just a little bit to let him clean himself and he scratched open his head wound again.

I felt so bad and so silly for taking the cone off in the first place but he's been so depressed with this cone on.

Well the vet said so far Hermes test has still been negative for ring worm. She said she really isn't too sure what is causing Hermes to want to go after that spot so much but she said there are 2 options.

    1. Leave the cone on until his wound is completely healed, no scabs or anything left and see what happens. If he does open his head again we will have to take him to a specialist.

    or

    2. He would need to be referred to a skin specialist and probably have a skin biospy done which will mean a couple hundred dollars at least.

So of course we are just going to wait and see what happens but if the wound gets worse we will take him to the vets right away.

Please say a little pray for my Little Man Hermes that his head wound heals fine and we no longer have a problem.

    Thanks,
    Melissa

Can cats get hotspots like dogs can? It reminds me of when my dog Daisy had hot spots and one was right on top of her head.

ETA: I looked on the internet and read that cats can get hot spots but it's rare for them to get them on the head although it's not unheard of. You might ask your vet about that and also skin mites.

What does it look like? My sister in laws kitty, Tom Cooter, went to the vet this morning because of a sore on his head. I don't know if he is digging at it. I didn't see him scratching the other day when I was there. The vet said it was an allergic reaction of some kind. But he did do a scraping I think to do some tests to make sure. Cooter was given a shot in his bum. I hope Hermes is able to heal up.

Well today we are taking Little Man back to the vets at 2:15 p.m.

We want to have his head looked at to make sure it looks like it's healing fine and also he has now developed a cold.

His eyes are dripping and he's sneezing and sounding very congested.

Please say a pray for my Little Man.

    Thanks,
    Melissa
