Has Your Dog Ever Been A Blood Donor?

I must admit I never really gave this much thought till I read this article.
Blood donors are really needed as much for animals as for human surgeries.

Would you ever consider letting your dog help this way?

I'm forever grateful to the pups who gave blood so that Cody could have a few extra days of feeling decent. Bless their sweet hearts and their compassionate owners.

I give blood, so yes I would have my dog give blood as well!! I have yet to hear of anywhere in the area to do so tho. I think it is one of the most important things a human, and animal can do.

Earle has been a donor. It was a fluke situation. He just happened to be at the clinic for a routine exam when an emergency came in. I think the other dog had been hit by a car. This was before Earle got sick, so I'm not sure he could donate anymore(he's on daily meds), but Earle and I would both do it again if asked.

My vet often uses shelter dogs as blood donors. He doesn't have the facilities to store blood on a long term basis. There is almost always a shelter dog at the clinic so they are available to donate. When Stuart worked at the shelter, he had a standing agreement with the clinic that they could use the dogs as blood donors. Saved time in an emergency--made good PR for the dogs too. I know of a couple who had been at the shelter for a long time who got adopted shortly after their "heroic" donations were publicized! A good story, or a sob story, almost always increases a dog's adoption odds!

You, of all "adopters" - should appreciate the value of a good Sob Story!

How many critters would you have at the Husky Ranch if it weren't for their
    individual, and unique, Sob Stories?

Hopefully, there will always be some of us who will byte on a good Sob Story!
A lot of nice critters depend on us to be receptive to those Tails!

From the article, I gather the dogs have to meet certain weight & have
health requirements also before they can become donors. The fact that
donor dogs also will be given exams every time they come in is a plus for
    them & their owners.

There is a clinic near my school that has a blood bank. I'd take Jasper to donate but they only accept dogs over 50lbs.

    Thank you Wolf_Q!
