None of my dogs/dog I know have had heartworm.
It says Dog's' in your pet area. Do you have more than one?

Did you get them checked as well?

I believe my mom's dog Dazzi was treated for heartworm when she was in the shelter. I don't know how the treatment went, but she seems to have recovered fully from it.

Sorry to hear that Chew has heartworm.
I will be thinking of her that she makes a full safe
    recovery when her treatments start.

I'm so sorry for Chewy. The treatment is not pleasant, but absolutley essential. Three weeks is quite a long time to wait to start treatment. Is there any way, or any where else, you can get Chewy into treatment sooner?

Why would you wait to get your other dogs checked?? Wouldn't you want to get them treated as soon as possible?!?!?

Poor Chewy! The longer you wait, the worse it gets. I hope you find some way to get the affected dogs treated as soon as possible before it is too far gone! Good luck.

    Oh Poor Chewy!!
I've never had to do this for any of my dogs, so I don't have any idea what it entails, but I will be keeping Chewy in my prayers as she gets her treatment.
Keep us updated on her recovery.

Two of my dogs had heartworms when I got them from the shelter. While it isn't a good idea to wait any longer than necessary, it is also not an emergency. It isn't contagious so other dogs can't get it from the infected one. But all of the dogs in a household should be checked.

The treatment involves a day at the vets where they administer medication in a vein. Usually the dog can go home the next day. In three weeks another shot and the dog goes home right away. The dog should be kept relatively quiet for the whole time. Another test is usually done after about three more weeks.

There was no way I could keep mine quiet for six weeks!! I would guess that if the heartworms were in an advanced stage, the heart would be pretty weak. This would cause a lot of activity to strain the heart more than it could take. Young dogs can handle it better than older dogs. One of mine was 12 when he had it done. They both came through with flying colors.

Heartworm is transmitted by infected mosquitos. Even indoor-only dogs should be on heartworm medication regularly.

    Hope this info helps.

We got Chewy checked and she is going in for the treatment, then my moms dog was dumped and my mom took her in and already got her tested and she came out positive(the day we got her) and then there is Scooter my brothers puppy we just got and we are going to take him in,which he already has been going in to this vet when he was with my aunt(former owner) and I think he was already tested, but we are taking him in....I dunno the vet gave us a date to bring him in for his next shots and stuff...

thanks mruffruff for all the info!

    Thanks again every one

I have a question. What about Sport? Or your moms old/new dog, you know the one that she got not to long ago? And what about the Schnozer or what ever breed of dog it was that you had to give away, I think his name was Chester? I'm just trying to figure this all out, seems you have a new dog every second and one of your old dogs is gone every second.
