have you tried one of those brush gloves?
It a glove you wear & when you pet the cat it brushes the cat
I'll try to find an image of it on google
Im not too sure about the cat one as I dont have a cat living with me, but I find that the kong zoom groom brushes are perfect for my lab, they do a cat version and you could ask in cat general to see if its any good but if its anything like the dog version its great! It massages the cat whilst removing the dead hair

I have a thing I got at pet smart I call the "Shedding Tool" and it works great!

The shedding blade works well. I also brush my cats regularly, even though they HATE it. I corner them, cuddle them, brush them and then give them treats. They sulk for a few hours, but the shedding problems is alleviated - however with cats, it's never done!
The furminator is by far tha best brush I've found so far

click the left option and you will see videos of it.
I bought something at work tonight called Shed Ender. I am not impressed at all with it, especially for $9. I tried it out on Shortie Girl. I get more fur off of her with my cheap blue plastic flea comb than that thing. It actually looks like an expensive flea comb with metal teeth and rubber grip.
Hey, at least I can tell the customers whether I'd recommend it or not.

DO NOT BUY WHILE SHELTER ANIMALS DIE!!
The furminator sounds like a good tool, but it better be SUPER for $30.00 plus!
