    BIG scare yesterday with Spikerdude...

I had a huge scare with Spike yesterday. Like deja vu of RB MooShoo.

I was in my bedroom schmoozing with one of my other furbabies when I heard a familiar yowl (just like MooShoo before he died from Thrombosis).

I went into the livingroom to see what was going on. There was my 19 lb. tuxedo laying on his side, his claw caught in my rug. I dislodged it and he wouldn't move (again, just like MooShoo). His pupils were dilated and non-responsive. I tried tapping his back paws to revive him, running my hands on his belly, in front of his non-responsive eyes to get him to blink.

NOTHING. I started sobbing in his fur for him to please not leave me!!! It lasted for about 30 seconds. He began coming around but laid there for a few more minutes. He then got up, walked into my bedroom, got up on the bed and slept for 2 hours. I immediately called the vet, fearing seizure, although the typical signs of a seizure are more harsh (body stiffens, jerks around, etc.)

Dr. Pennington told me it was probably the excruciating pain from the claw getting caught and twisted. I'm tearing up just thinking about it. He asked me if this had occurred before and I said no. I documented the whole incident.

I checked his claws this morning. He's very sensitive because he also has "Que" claws, callouses that grow from his pads which are very difficult to clip if you don't know what you're doing. I tried it once and will never do it again.

He's got an appointment with Dr. P on Friday morning to have both trimmed. I will spend the $15 a month to ensure his safety.

My poor boy!!! I got down on my knees thanking God he didn't take my Spikerdude away from me.
    *SIGH* of relief

Oh, thank God from us too that Spikerdude is not leaving you.

What a frightful thing to happen! No wonder you were shocked. I hope Spike will be alright!

Donna - I had a dog years ago that had seizures, but never had the extreme body jerking and all that goes along with it. She would give out the most ungodly noise I ever heard - something like the combination of a howl/scream/cry - it gave me chills. Then she would fall over, but never had the extreme jerky movements. I would just pick her up and hold her till she came out of it. She was always disoriented and confused after, and would sleep for several hours after it was over. The only thing that gave me any peace tho, was that my vet said she wouldn't remember it, and it wasn't painful for her. Not for her - but it took a whole lot out of me every time.
Just keep an eye on Spike - it's possible that it was a seizure. Good luck with the vet visit.

I've got an extensive medical background and figured it was a petit mal seizure. The vet says that cats don't have petit mal only grand mal seizures, with the jerking, stiffness and foaming at the mouth. All the signs he was exhibiting led me to believe it was petit mal. The vet said because Spike is 9+, it might be early signs of seizures. Only way was to watch him and document any other episodes.

My big guy is a lovable lug who was dumped off at a shelter outside in a VERY small carrier. He's got pooping issues, but nothing I can't handle.

His favorite spot is in the bathroom sink. He takes up the entire sink, LOOK:

I teared up reading this too. I've gone through it before and it's utterly horrifying. I hope it was just shock from the pain and wasn't a seizure. Hugs to you and Spike.

Wow, that was scary just reading it! I'm glad Spike is ok. I'm sure you'll keep a close eye on him and if it is seizures, they can be managed w/medication. My dog RB Charmin had seizures, was put on meds, and never had another one again. She lived to be 18 1/2. I'm sure Spike is in good hands.
    Blessings,
    Mary
